In the pursuit of well-being, the path from knowledge to action is often shrouded in complexity. We may know what to do, but barriers like procrastination, wavering motivation, stress, and lack of accountability get in the way of actually getting things done. There's always so much to do with so little time, and barely enough energy to stay on track—sound familiar?

The ADMIT framework and 3Rs for resilience (Reflect, Reframe, Respond) are two innovative approaches I created to help me gain clarity and build resilience personally and professionally. They have shown successful outcomes for individuals in my programs. Here’s how this powerful duo can be applied in your self-care journey to help guide you and keep you thriving.

Discover the Stress Sources: The ADMIT Framework

To embark on a transformative self-care journey, begin with the ADMIT framework. ADMIT stands for Adapting to new ways, Doing the work, Measuring success, Introspection, and Transformation. These phases are like windows into the sources of stress in your life. By identifying and understanding them, you lay the foundation for meaningful change.

Reflect on the Challenges: The First of the 3Rs

Now, let's delve deeper into each phase of the ADMIT framework and Reflect on the challenges it may present for self-care, by considering what, why, and how:

Adapting to New Ways

  • What: This phase highlights the difficulty of embracing change in your self-care routine.
  • Why: Change can be daunting, and it often feels more comfortable and easier to stick with familiar habits.
  • How: Reflect on specific instances where you resisted change in your self-care practices.

Doing the Work

  • What: Here, you may struggle with balancing self-care tasks amidst your busy life.
  • Why: The demands of daily life can make it challenging to prioritize self-care consistently, or at all.
  • How: Explore the reasons behind your time constraints and how they affect your self-care.

Measuring Success

  • What: External validation may overshadow your intrinsic motivations for self-care.
  • Why: Society often places a premium on external measures of success, leading you to seek validation from others in some way.
  • How: Reflect on instances where you prioritized others' opinions over your self-care needs.

Introspection

  • What: This phase highlights the struggle to find time for self-reflection amidst a busy schedule.
  • Why: The hustle and bustle of life can leave little room for self-examination.
  • How: Consider the moments when you felt overwhelmed by the lack of introspective time.

Transformation

  • What: You might find it challenging to embrace change with a growth mindset.
  • Why: The fear of the unknown or the comfort of familiarity can hinder transformation.
  • How: Reflect on instances when you resisted change or clung to old habits.

Reframe Challenges into Opportunities: The Second of the 3Rs

Having identified and Reflected on these challenges in a structured way using the ADMIT framework, it's time for a mental shift by Reframing each phase into positive opportunities:

Adapting to New Ways (Reframe): Instead of fearing change, see and internalize it as an opportunity for growth and exploration. Embrace the chance to evolve and improve your self-care practices.

Doing the Work (Reframe): View and internalize the effort required for self-care as an investment in your well-being. Recognize that prioritizing self-care is an essential part of living a fulfilling life.

Measuring Success (Reframe): Shift your focus inward and measure success by how well your self-care aligns with your authentic self and values. External validation becomes secondary to your intrinsic satisfaction.

Introspection (Reframe): Recognize that introspection is not a luxury but a necessity for self-care and internalizing your reframing. See it as an opportunity to gain clarity, reduce stress, and make more intentional choices.

Transformation (Reframe): Embrace change as a chance to evolve and grow. Recognize that transformation is the path to a more fulfilling and resilient self.

Respond with a Growth Mindset: The Third of the 3Rs

Having Reflected on your challenges and Reframed them as opportunities, it's time to Respond with a growth mindset:

With the powerful combination of clarity and resilience, one of the most effective ways to overcome the inertia of knowing but not doing is to start with small, manageable changes. Instead of committing to an hour at the gym every day, begin with a 15-minute walk or a 5-minute meditation session.

Setting Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals can provide structure and direction to your self-care efforts. Having a well-defined goal also helps with motivation and accountability. You can track your progress and celebrate your achievements along the way, which can be a powerful motivator to keep going. The key is to make these actions so simple that they become hard to say no to.
