Robert J. Hedaya, M.D., D.F.A.P.A., is often referred to as the 'thinking person's doctor' because of his comprehensive data-driven approach to mental illness. As the founder of The Whole Psychiatry and the Brain Recovery Center, he is a pioneer in Functional Medicine, which offers proven, data-driven results in the treatment of medical mysteries. It is comprehensive to health. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Hedaya, a leader in the field of psychiatry, teaches fellow physicians, medical students, and other healthcare clinicians. He is a Clinical Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Hedaya is the author of three books, dozens of articles, and has been called upon by the media for his medical expertise.

Medical Approach

Dr. Hedaya evaluates medical mysteries by focusing on the detailed evaluation and bi-directional interactions between and among a person’s hormonal system, immune system, gastrointestinal system, nutrition, environment, inflammation, infection, genetics, detoxification, cell signaling, life circumstance, age, and gender.

Since 1983, Dr. Hedaya has combined an active clinical practice with teaching as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Georgetown University Hospital. He has been a consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health. He was selected to teach the first psychoendocrinology course at Georgetown University Hospital Department of Psychiatry. He conducts an annual Affective Disorders program for Psychiatrists in Training at Georgetown and supervises practicing psychiatrists in Functional Medicine.

Dr. Hedaya is the author of Understanding Biological Psychiatry, The Antidepressant Survival Program: How to Beat the Side Effects and Enhance the Benefits of Your Medication, Depression: advancing the treatment paradigm, as well as a chapter in the Textbook of Functional Medicine, and additional book chapters. He makes frequent presentations to professional organizations across the country and has frequently been an expert consultant on Fox TV, the Today Show, CBS Evening News, 20/20, MSNBC, and CNN.

He had received the Physician's Recognition Award from the American Medical Association and was voted Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Georgetown University Hospital Department of Psychiatry.
